János Kulka

János Kulka ( born December 11, 1929 in Budapest, † 18 October 2001 in Stuttgart) was a Hungarian conductor and composer.

Life

Kulka was in Budapest, where he spent his youth, trained. After his studies he was a coach and later became conductor at the Budapest State Opera. In 1957, he worked in Vienna and later at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. At the Württemberg State Opera in Stuttgart he became principal conductor and 1961 at the Hamburg State Opera. As music director he was from 1964 to 1975 worked in Wuppertal. During this time he conducted as a guest at home and abroad. From 1976 to 1987 he headed the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra and was also State Kapellmeister in Stuttgart.

After a serious illness Kulka died in October 2001 in Stuttgart.
