Janusz Gortat

Janusz Kazimierz Gortat ( born November 5, 1948 in Brzozów ) is a retired Polish boxer. He won a bronze medal each in the light heavyweight division at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and 1976 in Montreal.

Career

Janusz Gortat began in 1965 with the boxes. He was Army veteran and was throughout his career, which lasted until 1982, the Army Sports Club Legia Warsaw. The coach, which he owed ​​the most was Henryk Niedzwiecki. In the Polish national team, which he served from 1970, he was trained by Feliks tribe. Janusz Gortat was a brilliant technician who was particularly strong on the defensive.

His first major successes came in 1967. This year he became the Polish junior champion in the light middleweight division and has already been used in several junior international struggles. In 1969 he started for the first time at the Polish Championship of seniors and defeated it in the middleweight division against Edmund lever. His first appearances in the Polish territories Season two countries were fighting in Cologne and Augsburg against the Federal Republic of Germany. On this occasion, he defeated Hartmut and Uwe Sasse Laroche each on points.

In the years 1970-1972 Janusz Gortat each Polish vice - champion in the light heavyweight division. During these three years he lost in the finals of this championship against Stanisław Dragan each on points. His career in international championships began but in 1969 at the European Championships in Bucharest. He started there in the middleweight division and won in the second round on Nazif Kuran from Turkey on points. In the quarter finals he met Mate Parlov from Yugoslavia, against the other in his career, he should provide some hard fighting still, and lost nearly 3-2 judges votes.

At the European Championships 1971 in Madrid Janusz Gortat started at light heavyweight. He won there in the second round against Uwe Laroche by techn. KO in the 3rd round and in the quarter-finals on Imre Toth of Hungary on points, but lost in the quarter-finals again against Mate Parlov 3-2 judges votes.

At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 Janusz Gortat then won his first international medal, a bronze. He won in Munich Jaroslav Kral from Czechoslovakia convincingly on points, won in the second round on Raymond Russell of the United States just 3-2 judges votes and defeated in the quarterfinals Rudi Hornig from Germany by way of knockout in the first round. On Mate Parlov he met in Munich until the semi-final and subject to that, again on points. This time, the judges scored but 5-0 for Parlov.

At the European Championships 1973 in Belgrade Janusz Gortat scored again in the final on Mate Parlov and again he had to concede defeat him. The judges agreed there again for 5-0 Parlov. Before this final Janusz Gortat had Günter Peters defeated from the FRG and Sjeng Verstappen from the defeats on points. Leon Spinks proved too strong for Janusz Gortat and won clearly 5-0 judges votes. Janusz Gortat won in Montreal but his second Olympic bronze medal.

At the end of his international career Janusz Gortat started again at the World Championships in Belgrade. He trained to separate from in the middleweight division. He won in Belgrade in a preliminary round fight against Cameroonian Yasel Kone and then succumbed already in the second round against the strong Soviet athlete Leonid Shaposhnikov by termination in the 2nd round.

Janusz Gortat provided always open and very often balanced fights, where he see his fights against Mate Parlov, often the judges had against him. He would then make a title at an international championship, which he never reached, succeeded.

In Poland, Janusz Gortat was in Pawel Skrzecz 1977 a tough competitor who eventually replaced him as the No. 1 Polish light heavyweight. He finished his career in 1982 after 317 fights of which he won 272. Janusz Gortat studied during his playing days at the Sports University AWF and graduated with a degree in physical education teacher in 1972. From 1972 to 1994 he was then coach of Legia Warsaw. His most successful students were there Gołota and Andrzej Tomasz Adamek.
