Design

The Shimakaze was an attempt prototype for the use of a new type of high-pressure steam boilers with the Japanese Navy.

Compared to its predecessor class ( Kagero - class) they displaced 410 ts more was 7.62 m long and 0.4 m wide. This allowed the number of torpedo armament to increase to 15 tubes in three five -part sets. Sixteen other ships from the construction program should be built in 1942, but were never commissioned.
