Japanese general election, 1983

The Shūgiin - election in 1983 was the 37th election to Shūgiin, the Japanese House of Commons, and was held on 18 December 1983.

On October 12, 1983, the Tokyo District Court (东京 地方 裁判 所, Tōkyō Chiho - saiban -sho ) sentenced former Prime Minister Tanaka Kakuei in the first trial because of the Lockheed scandal, but enjoyed for its electoral mandate immunity. The opposition sought a " resolution on the request for withdrawal " (议员 辞职 勧 告 决议, Giin jishoku Kankoku ketsugi ) compared to Tanaka. At the urging of the Tanaka faction sparked Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, the House on November 28. Issues of the campaign were next to the scandal and the demand for "clean politics " who had especially the Kōmeitō and the SPJ written on the flags, the reform of the management and a promised by Prime Minister Nakasone tax reduction.

The turnout was 67.9 %.

Effects

The LDP lost its absolute majority at a relatively low turnout. Prime Minister Nakasone had to continue to govern, can cooperate with the New Liberal Club, which provided a minister in the new cabinet. Tanaka Kakuei was selected in the 3rd constituency Niigata five seats to be filled as the candidate with the most votes and retained its immunity.
