Jarosław Dąbrowski

Jaroslaw Dabrowski ( Jaroslaw Dombrowski, [ jarɔswaf dɔmbrɔfsk ʲ i], born November 13, 1836 in Żytomierz, † May 23, 1871 in Paris) was a Polish revolutionary democrat, leader of the " Red " in the January Uprising of 1863 in Poland and 1871 Commander in Chief of the Paris commune in France.

Life and work

Dabrowski served as an officer in the Russian army, took part in the 1860 at the Polish independence movement and was exiled to Siberia by the Russians. After his escape, he went to France and became general of the Paris Commune. In May 1871 he was appointed commander in chief of the armed forces of the Commune. He fell at the barricades in the Montmartre district in Paris.

In the Spanish Civil War, the Jaroslaw Dabrowski Battalion - fought as part of the XI. International Brigade for the Republic.
