Jason Molina

Jason Andrew Molina ( born December 16, 1973 in Lorain, Ohio, † March 16, 2013 in Indianapolis, Indiana) was an American musician who mainly through its projects Songs: Ohia and Magnolia became known Electric Co.. Until his death he lived in Chicago. His music, mostly somber ballads with deep, emotional lyrics, is characterized by hard rock and country influences and is associated with the genre Independent.

Music

Often compared to Neil Young, his music is mostly worn by guitar chords and paints used discreetly to minimalistic percussion, and bass accents. However, it mainly lives on Molina's melancholy voice, which have, at times depressed, poetic lyrics often human relationships, feelings and memories on the topic.

Biography

Molina began his musical career as a bassist of various heavy metal bands, found his artistic determination, however, early in the writing and singing his own lyrics. In 1993 he founded the band Songs: Ohia. He was the songwriter and head of the band and took the shots that were recorded under the most primitive conditions in lo-fi quality, various musicians added.

The debut album Songs: Ohia released in 1997 with the U.S. label Palace of the musician Will Oldham. It was later published as the black album at Secretly Canadian from Bloomington, Indiana, where most of the other albums were released. As outstandingly commonly the works Impala, The Lioness and Did not It Rain, which was created in cooperation with some fellow musicians, respectively.

Since 2003, Molina played and sang in the band Magnolia Electric Co., the third album What Comes After The Blues introduced in 2004. An artistic change saw Molina in the fact that he had with the new band the opportunity to record in a real studio and not to take up as before, in unsuitable for professional productions rooms. Earlier, however, he had collaborated with the musician and producer Steve Albini. 2004 also appeared Molinas solo album Pyramid Electric Co..

2011 was announced on the band's website that Jason Molina had to retire from the music business for the time being due to a serious, unspecified illness. In addition, the expensive medical treatment not covered by health insurance tore the musician into debt. For this reason, his family called with the support of the label Secretly Canadian to " Jason Molina Medical Fund " to life. Fans could donate money and in return received a compilation of songs of the musician.

In May 2012, Molina released on the band's website a blog entry in which he announced that he finds himself on the road to recovery and working on new music. In September the same year the mini-album Autumn Bird Songs, which was, however, taken from the public before Molina's withdrawal appeared. It is a joint project with the artist William Schaff and was together with his book From Black Sheep Boys To Bill Collector - published The music -related artwork of William Schaff.

On March 16, 2013 Molina died of organ failure as a result of alcohol abuse.
