Geography

The Java Sea has an average depth of 40-50 meters ( maximum depth in the east to 200 m) and covers an area 367000-433000 km ², depending on the specific definition.

It is surrounded by the Indonesian islands of Borneo to the north, Java to the south, to the west of Sumatra and Sulawesi to the east. In the southwest connects a strait, the Sunda Strait, the Java Sea with the Indian Ocean. In the northwest the Karimata Street leads into the South China Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea to Makassarstraße. To the east is the Floressee and south of the Balisee.

Several islands and island groups are in the area, such as the Bawean, the Karimunjawa Islands or Kepulauan Seribu.

The Java Sea was at the end of the last ice age, when sea levels rose and the Sundaland was flooded.

Climate and Ecology

In this tropical sea ocean currents are determined by the change of the monsoon winds. In summer, the West monsoon pushes the water from the South China Sea, through the Karimata Street, in the Java Sea, the eastern monsoon, the water returns from the Floressee.

There are over three thousand different species of fish and fishing is an important source of income The area is popular due to its maritime underwater world with coral and sponges.

Pollution and drift nets represent a major problem for the animal and plant world dar. In addition, global warming and high water temperatures also threaten the reefs here and their species richness. Many reefs are transformed by the coral bleaching in scree. This endangers tourism as well as fishing.

History

On August 26, 1883, the volcano Krakatoa erupted in the Sunda Strait and triggered a global catastrophe.
