Jean-Baptiste Moens

Jean -Baptiste Moens ( born May 27, 1833 in Tournai, † April 29, 1908 in Ixelles / Elsene ) was a Belgian Berufsphilatelist and one of the pioneers of the stamp trade.

Life

First, he was from the age of 19 years bookseller. Already in the 1850s he began the trade of stamps. Well-known philatelists among his customers and he sold a lot of philatelic rarities. He has also written some philatelic books, some in collaboration with Louis Hanciau and published his own stamp catalogs. Hanciau became his business partner. From 15 February 1863 to 1900 one of the world's first philatelic journals with the name " Le Timbre -Poste " issued whose editor was Louis Hanciau again. A specialty of it were new and reprints of stamps, some with original printing plates. He also negotiated with postal remaining stock of stamps, both at that time was not yet prohibited. Both his reputation as well as its sales were legendary. In 1898 he completed a biography of all the then known 19 Mauritius Post Office stamps. The he introduced Roman numerals (I- XIX) was extended to later discovered copies and is still known. In 1900 he finished his business activities.

Private life

Around 1850 Moens learned his wife Sophie, born Huys know. They had seven children and adopted five more children.
