Jean de Montfort-Castres

John of Montfort (fr: Jean de Montfort, † December 1300 ) was Count of Squillace, and Lord of Castres, La Ferte- Alais and Bréthencourt. He was a son of Philip II of Montfort and Joan of Lévis - Mirepoix.

After the death of his father on the crusade of 1270 Johann took over his heritage. He belonged to the French nobility in the Kingdom of Sicily, which had been established there since the conquest of Charles of Anjou. He supported his cousin Guy de Montfort in his rehabilitation after he had 1271 the English Prince Henry of Almain murdered. 1273 took over Johann the office of king's chamberlain. After the outbreak of the Sicilian Vespers in 1282, he took part against the King of Aragón in the battle. He stood from 1285 to the Regent (General Captain) Robert of Artois to the side, which ruled the Kingdom of Naples during the absence of King Charles II. After Robert of Artois had left in the fall of 1291 to France, Johann was appointed his successor in the office of Captain General of the Kingdom and therefore took on the side of the king a the highest position in the state.

Johann was married three times:

  • Isabella Meletta, daughter of Manfredo chamberlain Maletta and great-granddaughter of Emperor Frederick II;
  • With Giovanna di Fasanella, daughter of Pandolfo di Fasanella;
  • With Marguerite de Beaumont, daughter and heiress of Pierre de Beaumont, Count of Montescaglioso.

As he had no children fell his French possessions to his sister Eleanor and her husband, Count John V of Vendôme (House Montoire ). The county Squillace fell to the Sicilian- Neapolitan crown.
