Jean -François Fortin ( born March 15, 1979 in Laval, Quebec ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who played for the EC VSV in the Austrian Hockey League.

Career

Fortin began his career in 1995 at the Sherbrooke Faucons in the Canadian Junior Football League QMJHL, where he belonged to the tribe squad and could be increased continuously in the following years. Already in his second year at the Faucons increased the defender 's points haul to 37 points scorer in 59 games, so some talent scouts from the NHL were attentive and he finally in the NHL Entry Draft in 1997 in the second round by a total of 35 position of the Washington Capitals has been selected. Fortin was then two years in the QMJHL and joined the 1999/00 season in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates, the former farm team of the Washington Capitals. His last season in the Canadian Junior Football League at the Sherbrooke Faucons was also his best since the right-handed shooter was able to achieve 68 points scorer in 76 games.

His first year in the AHL was for the Canadian sporting quite successful. Although he initially did not get the chance to prove themselves at the Capitals in the NHL, however, Fortin could win a regular place in the Pirates. After another year, which he spent entirely in the Minor League, was the defender during the season 2001 /02 for the first time in the squad of the Washington Capitals. In the end, Fortin was used 36 times, scoring four points. In the following three years, the Canadians played mostly in the AHL and was rarely used in the NHL. Overall, he was only 71 times the shirt of the capital. After the leaders of the capital city agreed to the 2005/06 season with the Hershey Bears on cooperation, Fortin also ran in the subsequent period for the Bears. In the very first season he won the Calder Cup with the team after the team in the play- off final was the Milwaukee Admirals beat.

Since a renewed long-term commitment in the NHL seemed unlikely for Fortin, the Canadians signed to season 2006/ 07 a contract with the Foxes Duisburg in the German Ice Hockey League. The defense attorney was able to convince at the foxes and joined the 2007/08 season in the league to the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg, which initially furnished them him with a one-year contract. In Wolfsburg, the Canadians belonged to the tribe squad and was one of the top performers in the team. In 2008, Fortin nevertheless decided against a contract extension with the Grizzly Adams and instead adopted a more lucrative offer of the Russian clubs HK MVD Balaschicha, with whom he was active in the newly formed KHL henceforth. After a few months, and only four stakes he left the club but for personal reasons and returned in the DEL, where he received a contract with the Krefeld Penguins.

After the 2008/ 09 season, he finished his career first. On November 23, 2009, he signed, however, the Austrian first division club EC VSV a contract until the end of the season. In early March 2010, he ended his career for good.
