In 1953 he founded the ensemble " Jean -Marie Leclair " ( named after the composer ), which was renamed the " Orchestre de chambre Jean -François Paillard " 1959. His first record, " Musique Française au XVIIIe siècle " ("French Music of the 18th Century" ), which came out in June 1953, followed by a large number of recordings which opened up new perspectives on the interpretation of the music of the 17th and 18th century connected with the rediscovery of a large part of French music before Berlioz. In the 1960s and early 1970s it was one of the leading chamber orchestra for music of the 18th century in Europe. So it was that Paillard et al The Four Seasons by Vivaldi times brought to the performance in 1480.

A long-standing cooperation connected him with many important French players of his era, which was reflected both in the concert as well as in recordings. Musical Style

Jean -François Paillard researched parallel to his activities as a conductor intensively in many European libraries for clues for the performance of music before Mozart. Even before 1960 he had sighted a large part of the existing writings on this subject.

Its about 10 annually recordings from 1956 made it possible for him at that time to convey his research in sound and musical style at various music academies in Europe. In the 1970s there was a new conception on the play of music of the 18th century, the term " historically informed performance practice." Jean -François Paillard not joined the new style. He refused to accept what accounted for the success of the new interpretation of the music of the 18th century: historical instruments, the concert pitch 415Hz, children's voices in vocal music. This temporarily earned him the harsh criticism of many music critics, but he was able to pursue in the next two decades his way: Mixed voices in the choruses, maintaining the standard pitch of 440 Hz and a return to the countertenor.
