Jean-Frédéric Osterwald

Jean [- ] Frédéric Ostervald ( Johann Friedrich Osterwald, born November 25, 1663 Neuchâtel, † April 14, 1747 in Neuchâtel ) was a Reformed theologian from Switzerland.

After a basic training in Zurich and a first degree in Saumur Ostervald studied theology at Orléans with Claude Pajon (1626-1685), in Paris with Jean Claude and Louis Tronchin in Geneva ( 1629-1705 ). In 1683 he was ordained in his hometown for the pastor. He won in his lifetime a great influence as a preacher, pastor, teacher and author. Along with Jean- Alphonse Turrettini and Samuel Werenfels he formed the so-called " theological triumvirate of Switzerland ", in contrast to the strict Calvinism prepared ideas of the Enlightenment and Pietism. Theologically, he showed a certain tendency to Socinianism and Arminianism.

Among his numerous works, especially his revision of the Bible translation of Pierre -Robert Olivétan was known.
