Jean Joseph Thonissen

Jean Joseph Thonissen ( Ndl January Jozef Thonissen; born January 21, 1817 in Hasselt, † August 17, 1891 ) was a Belgian jurist and politician.

Life

Thonissen studied law, devoted himself to this the legal profession. After he had held various offices in the field of management and administration of justice, he was elected in 1847 professor of criminal law at the Catholic University of Louvain, and later in the House of Representatives.

1855 Thonissen was appointed a member of the Royal Academy in Brussels and in 1869 a corresponding member of the French Academy. Since 1863, the Chamber of Deputies belonging, October 26, 1884 he was Minister of the Interior and of Public Instruction, but resigned in October 1887.
