Jean-Louis Fage

Jean -Louis Fage, full name Jean Baptiste Louis Fage, (* September 30, 1883, † 1964 in Dijon ) was a French marine biologist, Arachnologe and speleologist. He came from Limoges.

Life and work

He began his biological studies at the Sorbonne in Paris and in the laboratory of Saint- Vaast- la -Hougue, the Laboratoire maritime de Saint -Vaast- la -Hougue, where he at Remy Perrier (1861-1936) (brother of Edmond Perrier ) and Gaston Bonnier (1853-1922) met.

Fage submitted his doctoral thesis on the nephridia of the Polychaeta in 1906, Recherches sur les aires organes segment of annélides polychètes. After his graduation he worked for 14 years in the marine biology laboratory of Banyuls -sur -Mer, the Laboratoire de Banyuls -sur -Mer. During this time he worked on crustaceans, plankton and caving.

In 1920 he joined the staff in the Muséum national d' histoire naturelle in Paris. In 1938 he became a professor and director of the successor of Joseph Charles Gravier ( 1865-1937 ). He retained this chair for the fields of worms and crustaceans 1938-1954. Having lived as a widower three years, he died at his daughter's house in Dijon.

He led the Commission of caving of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ), Laboratoire Souterrain de Moulis Presidency and was the first president of the Comité de direction. In addition, he also took over the Commission of caving of the CNRS to the Presidency ( Commission de spéléologie du CNRS).
