Jean-Louis Michel (oceanographer)

Jean -Louis Michel works as an engineer at the French marine institute Institut français de recherche pour l' exploitation de la mer ( IFREMER ). He discovered with his team and with the team of Robert Ballard, the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland. Using video and ultrasound technology, they were able to locate the wreck in 3800 meters depth.

Michel was crucial in the development of Sonar Acoustique REMORQUE (short: SAR) involved, a towable side scan sonar, which came into use at Ballard's first expedition to the Titanic and was able to produce images of the seabed of unprecedented quality in his time.
