Jean Margéot

Jean Cardinal Margeot ( born February 3, 1916 in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius, † July 17, 2009 in Bonne Terre, Mauritius ) was Bishop of Port Louis.

Life

Jean Margeot studied in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. After his ordination in 1938 in the Lateran basilica, he returned to his home, where he worked as a pastor. In 1956 he became vicar general of his native diocese of Port Louis and now the first Vicar General of Mauritius at all. On June 21, 1956 he was awarded Pope Pius XII. the honorary title house Prelate of His Holiness.

On February 6, 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Port- Louis. He received his episcopal consecration on May 4, 1969, the former Pro- Nuncio to Madagascar, Archbishop Paolo Mosconi; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Delhi, Innocent Angelo Fernandes, and the Bishop of Saint- Denis- de -La Réunion, Georges -Henri Guibert CSSp. Margeot was very active in the field of youth catechesis and started a campaign against drug abuse. From 1986 to 1989 he was president of the Conférence Episcopale de l' Océan Indien ( CEDOI ).

Pope John Paul II took him in the consistory of 1988, as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gabriele Arcangelo ALL'ACQUA Traversa in the College of Cardinals to. On February 15, 1993 John Paul II Margéots adopted for reasons of age pre- mounted resignation from the office of Bishop of Port- Louis.

In 1995, he was with Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala pilgrims in the Marian shrine of Medjugorje.
