Jean Maximilien Lamarque

Jean Maximilien Lamarque ( born July 22, 1770 in Saint -Sever, † June 1, 1832 in Paris) was a French general during the Napoleonic Wars and later a member of the French Parliament. He was an opponent of the Ancien Régime and was involved in the suppression of the Bourbons and legitimists. The resulting riots at his funeral were the writer Victor Hugo as a template for the uprisings in his work Les Misérables.

Life

Lamarque came at the suggestion of his father in 1791 at the military. During the Pyrenees campaign in 1793, he was promoted to brigadier general, then served in Italy under Eugène de Beauharnais and on the Rhine and distinguished himself in 1800 at the Battle of Hohenlinden from. After the Peace of Luneville, he commanded in Spain under Leclerc and dwelt thereon the campaign of 1805 in Austria. After the peace he was commissioned, Joseph Bonaparte to Naples accompany, and became his aide and chief of staff. In 1810 he was appointed Grand Officer Legion of Honour, was 1812 in Russia and then to the fall of Napoleon in Spain.

When Napoleon was exiled to Elba in 1814, he remained faithful and this occurred during the first restoration out of service. After Napoleon's return he took a command to the Belgian border. After the Battle of Waterloo and the re- seizure of power of the Bourbons he came up with a list of the outlaws and had to go into exile in Belgium. In November 1818, he received permission to return to France. He became politically active and presented a series of papers, proposals for the reorganization of the army included, but were unsuccessful. In 1828 he was appointed a member of the House of Representatives and represented the Landes department.

Lamarque died on June 1, 1832 during an epidemic of cholera. On June 5, it was at his funeral, at which 200,000 people participated, for a demonstration of the democratic opposition to the July Monarchy, which caused bloody but short-lived insurrections.
