Jean Moréas

Jean Moréas, actually Ioannis Papadiamantopoulos (Greek Ιωάννης Παπαδιαμαντόπουλος, born April 15, 1856 in Athens, † April 30, 1910 in Paris) was a French poet and the grandson of Ioannis Papadiamantopoulos the Elder, one of the heroes of Messolonghi.

Life

Jean Moréas was initially one of the leaders of the Symbolist movement in French literature and advocated the relaxation of the mandatory guidelines for the French verses. On September 18, 1886, he published in the literary supplement of Figaro his manifesto Le symbolisme.

In 1892, he turned away from symbolism to establish the école romane, which faces the grim "Nordic" seal the clarity of the Greco-Roman poetry. His most famous book of poems, Stances (1899), is an example of this new sealing manner in a classical language.
