Jean-Philippe Toussaint

Jean -Philippe Toussaint (* November 29, 1957 in Brussels) is a Belgian writer and director.

Life

Jean -Philippe Toussaint was born the son of the journalist Yvon Toussaint and the bookseller Monique Lanskoronskis. From 1971 he lived in Paris. In 1973 he won the Cannes junior world title in Scrabble. In 1978 he received a diploma from the Institut d' études politiques de Paris, a year later, his DEA ( Diploma d' études approfondies ) in Modern History. Already during his studies he began to write. He wrote a play and in collaboration with a friend a novel, and another novel, which he sent to Alain Robbe- Grillet, which was never published.

In order to avoid military service, he applied for a job as a French teacher in Médéa (Algeria) and held this activity from 1982 to 1984. Here he met Madeleine SANTANDREA know, both married in 1983. From the marriage a son and a daughter were born. During this time he wrote the novel La salle de bain, which was initially rejected by several publishers. A copy of his manuscript, which he had sent to Alain Robbe-Grillet, finally fell into the hands of Jérôme Lindon, the publisher Éditions de Minuit, which it published in 1985. Toussaint had this publisher is not written because he " franchement trop intellectual " appeared to him.

In 1986 the novel Monsieur. In 1987, he co-authored with John Lvoff the screenplay for La salle de bain, who also took over the government in its film adaptation. Two years later, L' appareil -photo, in about the same time with the filming of Monsieur, at the Toussaint first self directed. In 1990 he was invited to spend the Villa Médicis Hors les Murs few months in Madrid, where he worked on the novel La reticence, which came out in 1991. In his collection of essays The urgency and patience Toussaint describes his development as a writer and his reading. The book was No. 1 on the SWR of Fame and received mostly very positive reviews in Germany.

In addition to his work as a writer and director Toussaint has now ( especially in Japan and France) presented his photographic work in several exhibitions. He lives in his native city and the island of Corsica.
