Jean Rolin (cardinal)

Jean Rolin (* 1408 in Autun, † June 22, 1483 in Auxerre ) was a French bishop and cardinal.

Jean was a son of the Burgundian Chancellor Nicolas Rolin. He was appointed on December 20, 1448 Cardinal on August 20, 1436 by Pope Nicholas V. Bishop of Chalon -sur -Saône on May 29, 1431 Bishop of Autun.

Like his father, he was concerned about the gain in wealth and power for himself and his family. He was rarely in Autun present, but often in church affairs in Rome. He belonged to the Burgundian nobles who witnessed the downfall of the Burgundian duchy after the death of Charles the Bold in 1477. He was confessor to the French dauphin ( heir to the throne ) and of King Louis XI.

Jean was the former cathedral of Saint Nazaire Autun restore a vanished building, which stood next to the present Cathedral of Saint Lazare. At the latter he had in 1469 built the bold late Gothic transept. He was a patron of the arts, his portrait can be seen at the Christmas picture of the Master of Moulins, Musée Rolin in Autun and in the custody in the same museum fragment of a mural from the 1474 donated by him St. Vincent Chapel of the Cathedral.
