Jean Séguy

Jean Séguy ( May 3, 1925 in Bône, Algeria, † 9 November 2007 in Liancourt, France) was a French sociologist of religion and researcher of the Anabaptists, Mennonites, Seventh Day Adventists and other Christian dissident movements.

Life

Jean Séguy was born in 1925 in Algeria. He was born into a Catholic family, southwest of French origin. After several years of activities in England and Egypt as a language teacher, he came to Paris, where he pratique at the École des hautes études religion a scientific study completed. In 1956 he published a treatise on the sects in France (Les sectes protestantes dans la France contemporaine ). Since 1960 he worked at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ). His main area of ​​research were religious nonconformists and dissident movements of Protestantism and Catholicism. In 1970 he received his doctorate from the Sorbonne with a thesis on the Anabaptist movement in France, which he published in 1977 under the title Les Assemblées anabaptistes - mennonites de France (904 pages).

In addition to his religious-historical research, he occupied himself intensively with the sociology of religion. He was strongly influenced by Max Weber and Ernst Troeltsch and made their religion sociological work in the French-speaking area much known. For the journal Archives de sciences sociales des religions ( ASSR ), which he directed from 1981 to 1988, he wrote countless posts. An equally active employee he was in the magazine Christ Seul, the monthly magazine of the French Mennonites. As a member of the Mennonite Historical Society of France ( Association française d' histoire anabaptistemennonite ) he was one of the most influential figures of the scientific research Mennonites in France.
