Jean Toussaint Arrighi de Casanova

Jean -Toussaint Arrighi de Casanova, Duke of Padua ( born March 8, 1778 Corsica, † March 22, 1853 in Paris ) was a French general and politician.

Life

Arrighi, a relative of Napoleon Bonaparte, was educated at the military school in Rebais at Meaux, occurred in 1796 in the army, accompanied Joseph Bonaparte in 1797 as secretary of legation to Rome, then fought as a captain in Egypt and was severely wounded at St. Jean d' Acre. At Marengo he was promoted to squadron leader, at Austerlitz to the Supreme Dragoon Guards, and at Friedland, the Emperor appointed him brigadier general.

In 1808 he received the hereditary title of Duke of Padua and rich domains in Germany. In 1809 he fought as a general of division in Esslingen am Neckar, Wagram and organized 1812 cohorts formed for safekeeping the French coast from attacks by the English out of the National Guard. In the spring of 1813, he became commander of the 3rd Cavalry Corps of the Army, in May the governor of Leipzig, the Lützow Free Corps was attacked by Fournier at Fawns in spite of the armistice took in August participated in the ill-fated train Nicolas -Charles Oudinot against Berlin and then defended in the battle of Leipzig the suburbs.

In 1814 he distinguished himself still at Nogent and Laon and in the defense of Paris. During the Hundred Days, 1815, he was sent by the emperor to Corsica, after whose fall under the suspicion of having sought the independence of the island, ostracized, but amnestied in 1820.

He lived since then in complete seclusion at his country estate Courson. In 1849 he was elected from Corsica in the Legislative Assembly and here belonged to the heads of the Bonapartist party. His son Louis Arrighi de Casanova, Duke of Padua was under Napoléon III. Minister of the Interior.
