Jean Vercoutter

Jean Vercoutter ( born January 6, 1911 in Lambersart; † 6 July 2000) was a French Egyptologist.

Jean Vercoutter was a member of the Institut Français d' Archéologie Orientale in Cairo from 1930 to 1950. 1949 to 1955 he worked at the CNRS, where he received his Ph.D. with his work L' Égypte et le monde Egeen préhellénique 1953. 1955 to 1960 he served as director of the Sudanese Antiquities in Khartoum, the archaeological research of the country. Since 1958 Vercoutter was a regular member of the German Archaeological Institute. In 1960 he moved to the University of Lille, where he taught as a professor. In addition, he was the director of the excavations in the Sudanese Mirgissa. 1977 to 1981 he headed the Institut Français d' Archéologie Orientale.

Writings

Along with Elena Cassin, and Jean Bottero was Vercoutter out the volumes 2-4 of the Fischer World History, which dealt with the ancient Near Eastern world. From him the chapters that relate to Egypt come. In addition, he edited the " Kush " Journal of the Sudan Antiquities Service in his time in Sudan.
