Jeb Bishop

Jeb Bishop ( b. 1962 in Raleigh (North Carolina)) is an American trombonist and bass and electric guitar player in the field of creative jazz and new music improvisation.

Life and work

Bishop grew up in Raleigh ( North Carolina) and studied classical trombone at Northwestern University, then engineering science and philosophy at North Carolina State University. Then he continued his philosophy studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Arizona, Loyola University and in Belgium at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

In 1980 he played bass and electric guitar in rock bands in his hometown. In the 1990s he moved to Chicago, turned to jazz and played bass guitar in the Noise Jazz Band The Flying Luttenbachers and in an avant-garde formation, which was directed by Ken Vandermark, The Unheard Music Quartet. Mid-1990s, he performed both as a trombonist as well as an electric guitarist with the Vandermark Five. He also was a member of another group of Vandermark, the formation School Days. He also participated as a session musician on recordings of Chicago's post-rock scene as Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Gastr del Sol, or The Sea and Cake.

Around 2000, he concentrated due to tinnitus exclusively on the trombone and founded his own trio, the bassist Kent Kessler and drummer Tim Mulvenna belonged. The trio played a two albums for OkkaDisk, for which he composed almost all of the material. The second album Aftermmons originated with the guest guitarist Jeff Parker.

Bishop also worked with Daniele D' agarose (Chicago Overtones, 2004), Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Joe McPhee and Sebi Tramontana, Tony Bevan and John Edwards. In Chicago, he also plays regularly with Fred Lonberg -Holm, Michael Zerang, Josh Abrams and Hamid Drake and Harris Eisenstadt and since 2006 as a member of the Globe Unity Orchestra. With Jeff Albert, he is co-leader of the Lucky 7's ( Junkyard Pluto).
