BW

The Jebel Aulia Dam is a dam in the White Nile at Jebel Aulia of the city about 40 km upstream from Khartoum in Sudan. It was built between 1933 and 1937 to compensate for the pent-up water, the periods of low water flow in the Blue Nile. From 2002 to 2005 he was re-tooled to produce electricity with an installed capacity of 30.4 MW.

Description

The total 4395 m long Jebel Aulia dam consists of a 1630 m long gravity dam with linear layout which is connected by a 2765 m long Erdschüttdamm in the flat area in front of the left bank.

About the dam performs a two-lane road, as far as the narrows in the area of the dam, that there is still enough space for a vehicle and a pedestrian.

In the main fairway is a lock with a chamber of 67 mx 17 m and a bascule bridge. In addition, a fish ladder is installed.

The dam can the Nile River to a reservoir with a length of about 50 km, a depth of 12 - dam 13 m and a volume of 3,500 million m³. The outflow is regulated by 50 goals in the dam. The reservoir and be periodically controlled outflow same one hand, the flow of the Nile during the low water period of the Blue Nile, on the other hand is enhanced by the damming of the evaporation loss of the White Nile.

In the years 2002 to 2005, the dam was retrofitted to produce electricity. To this end, 40 of the 50 gates were equipped with groups of two turbines and generators that can be lifted by a moving, running along the top gantry crane from the water if necessary to allow free drainage. These 80 units have an installed capacity of 30.4 MW.
