Jeffrey Hopkins

Jeffrey Hopkins ( born 1940 ) is an American Tibetologist.

Hopkins is Emeritus of Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Virginia, where he taught since 1973. In more than 25 books he deals with Tibetan Buddhism. In 1983 the influential work of meditation on Emptiness, in which he created the basis for the Gelug school.

From 1979 to 1989 he was chief interpreter of the Dalai Lama into English. He also had a lasting influence on the development of the International Tibet Independence Movement ( ITIM ).
