Jehangir Sabavala

Jehangir Ardeshir Sabavala ( born August 23, 1922 in Bombay, † September 2, 2011 in Mumbai) was an Indian painter.

Life and work

Sabavala came from a wealthy Parsi family. He attended the Sir JJ School of Art, where he received a diploma in 1944. He then went to Europe and studied from 1945 to 1947 at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. Here he met his future wife, who studied at the London School of Economics. From 1948 to 1951 Sabavala lived in Paris from 1953 to 1954, he attended the Académie Julian and finally in 1957 the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere.

During his career as an artist Sabavala had over 30 solo exhibitions in India and abroad. Last exhibitions Jehangir Sabavala were: A Retrospective at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai and New Delhi (2005-2006), as well as exhibitions at the Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai ( 2008) and in the Aicon Gallery in New York City (2009 ) to see.

As part of group exhibitions were some of his works, among others, 2004 Jehangir Nicholson Collection in Mumbai, as well as can also be seen in 2004 in Mumbai in The Search or 2005 in the exhibition Trends and Techniques -Water Color in India in the Gallery 88 in Kolkata.

Honors

Sabavala was awarded the Padma Shri in 1977. Arun Khopkars film Colours of Absence on Sabavala 1994 won a National Film Award. In 2007, the Lalit Kala Ratna Sabavala got. Other awards include the Dadabhai Naoroji Millennium Award, the Kala Ratna of the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society and the Monaco Grand Prix de la Peinture.
