Jenny Haniver

When Jenny Haniver refers to dried and preserved specimens of the family Rajiformes (skates and rays ). The preparations are characterized by their grotesque design and so have similarities with the jackalope. The design recognizes several main motifs, these are mostly evil figures, angels and dragons and other mythical creatures.

The origin of the name is not fully understood, it probably comes from the French jeune d' Anvers ( girl from Antwerp ) from. The name was then personalized by British sailors to Jenny Haniver.

Traditionally carved Antwerp sailors such figures, after which they were painted. Through the sale of these figures to tourists and passing by ships they earned some extra money. The earliest representation of a Jenny Haniver Konrad Gesner's Historia Animalium immersed in band 4 in 1558. He noted there specifically indicated that it was not in these figures are small dragons or monsters, as was then often assumed, but groomed skate. There may be some stories about dragons and other mythical creatures in medieval times on Jenny Hanivers can be traced back. Probably also the Seebischof a Jenny Haniver.
