Jenny Nimmo

Jenny Nimmo ( born January 15, 1944 in Windsor ), is a British author of children 's books. Her work has been awarded several prizes. She became famous mainly through the book series The Children of the Red King about the boy Charlie Bone.

Life and work

Jenny Nimmo initially worked as an actress, screenwriter and department head for the children's programs at the BBC. In 1975, she published with The Bronze Trumpeter her first children's book. For her novel The Snow Spider, she was honored in 1986 by Booktrust, an independent British Foundation for the Promotion of reading, with the " Nestlé Smarties Book Prize ". Also for The Snow Spider she received in 1987 by the Welsh Books Council (WBC ) the " Tir na n- Og Award". In 1997 Nimmo got for The Owl Tree the "Gold Award of the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize ".

She was known primarily for her book series The Children of the Red King. Nimmo, who attended a boarding school at the age of six to eleven years, tells the story of the boarding school pupil Charlie Bone, who has magical abilities. In the U.S. alone could be sold until October 2005 a total of more than three million copies of the series.

Jenny Nimmo is married to the painter David Wynn Millward. She has three children and lives in Wales in an old windmill.

Charlie Bones life changes abruptly when he finds out that he, like many in his family, has a special ability. As soon as he looks at a photo he can hear the voices of the people pictured there as well as the surrounding noise. His grandmother and her sisters have been waiting for the appearance of his gift and send it immediately to Bloor Academy. At this boarding school students are taught with special talents in music, art and theater as well as children with " special gifts " such as Charlie. At the academy, he finds out more and more about his missing father and experienced with newfound friends dangerous adventures.

The series was originally designed for five volumes, and finally included eight volumes. In the English editions, separate volumes under up to three different titles have been published. The covers of the German editions were designed by Regina Kehn.
