Jenő Illés

Eugen Illés (born 28 January 1879 in Debrecen, † October 17, 1951 in Budapest; native Jeno Illés ) was a Hungarian cinematographer, film director and screenwriter.

Life

He studied in Budapest and Berlin Classical philosophy, astronomy, mathematics and music. In 1901, he worked as an engineer and writer.

In 1912 he became a cameraman and soon afterwards director for the film production company Duskes GmbH in Berlin. As a director, he played a major role in the discovery of silent movie stars Erna Morena. In 1913 he was taken by Alfred Duskes in its newly established production company Literaria film under contract at a monthly salary of 600 marks plus bonus, or about 3,011 euros.

Illés staged mainly Sensations and adventure stories, comedies and melodramas in addition also.

In 1915 he returned temporarily to Hungary and Budapest turned into films for various clients. From 1917 Illés was back in Berlin and worked for the neutral film as a director, cinematographer and screenwriter. Under his direction in 1918 was the first adaptation of the novel Alraune. In 1927 he ended his film career and returned to Hungary.
