Jequié

Jequié is a Brazilian city in the state of Bahia. In 2012 it had about 152,000 inhabitants. The city is located 210 km south-west of Salvador, the capital of the state away, on the Rio de Contas, the transition between the savanna belt and the forest zone ( zona da mata ). The area is rich in iron ore Jequié.

History

The place Jequié emerged from a fief of the Portuguese João Gonçalves da Costa, the Fazenda Borda da Mata had founded. The ranch was later sold to José de Sá Bittencourt. He had fled from Minas Gerais to Bahia, after a conspiracy against the Portuguese rule ( Inconfidencia Mineira ) ( Minas Conspiracy ) was in 1789 failed. After Please Courts death in 1828 the estate was divided among his heirs, part of the ranch called henceforth the Jequié.

At a town Jequié developed in the second half of the 19th century, thanks to busy markets, the traders from a wide area attracted. Due to the inland navigation on the Rio de Contas and mule transport Jequié could be supplied with all essential goods from larger cities. Jequié became a hub for the Southeast and Southwest of Bahia, as well as for the catchment area of the Rio de Contas; the expectant city grew along the banks of the river.

Since 1860 Jequié belonged to Munizip maracas. Given its growing importance as a trading center Jequié 1897 released from Maracas and raised under the first Mayor Urban Gondim for independent Munizip. 1910 Jequié received its town charter. Today the city is one of the largest and wealthiest communities in Bahia.

Derivation of the place name

The name " Jequié " means in the language of the indigenous people " Jaguar ", in reference to the large number of these animals in the region. One other explanation is that the place name derives from the word " jequi ", a funnel- like object used by the Indians for fishing in the Rio de Contas.

Climate

Jequié is known for its warm climate. Surrounded by mountains, the city suffered during most of the year under the heat. On summer days, the temperature can reach 48 ° C, at night, it can also be cold.
