Jerome Robbins

Jerome Robbins (* as Jerome Wilson Rabinowitz on October 11, 1918 in New York City; † 29 July 1998) was an American choreographer.

Life

Robbins came from a New York Jewish parents. He studied at New York University, but interrupted his studies after one year. Then he studied ballet with Ella Daganova, Eugene Loring and Anthony Tudor. Since 1939, he has performed as a dancer. In 1944 he choreographed Fancy Free, his first ballet, and the musical On the Town, next year Billion Dollar Baby. For the choreography of the musical High Button Shoes ( 1947) he received the Tony Award. For the director of the musical Fiddler on the Roof (1964 ), he again received a Tony Award. Overall, he was honored with this award five times. He was also the choreographer of the musical West Side Story.

Robbins got together with Robert Wise, the film awards Academy Award and Directors Guild of America Award for his direction of the film West Side Story.

1971 developed a Robbins choreography to the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Robbins was bisexual. He died after a heart attack in New York City .. His ashes were scattered over the Atlantic Ocean.
