Jerry Sanders (politician)

Gerald Robert " Jerry" Sanders ( * July 14, 1950 in San Pedro, California) is an American politician of the Republican Party. From 5 December 2005 to 3 December 2012, he was mayor of the city of San Diego.

Jerry Sanders was born 1950 in San Pedro, a district of Los Angeles. He attended San Diego State University. Sanders is married and has two children, Lisa and Jamie.

At the police of San Diego

During his last year at the University of Sanders policeman was at the San Diego Police Department. He was 26 years in the police force from 1973 to 1999, including some from 1993 as chief of police. During his tenure as Chief of Police, the crime rate fell by more than 40%.

Mayor

Jerry Sanders was elected on 8 November 2005 with a majority of 54 % of the vote to succeed the resigned Dick Murphy for Mayor of San Diego. His counterpart candidate was Donna Frye. On 19 September 2007, he announced his opposition to the recognition of homosexual partnerships abruptly. He explained his decision in a speech that he could not explain his lesbian daughter why their relationship should be worth less than that of a heterosexual relationship.

In 2008 he succeeded against Steve Francis re-election for a second term. In 2012, he could not run again due to term limits; and was succeeded by Democrat Bob Filner.
