Jersey Giant

Jersey Giant is a domestic chicken breed that was came to its own in the late 19th century by John and Thomas Black in the United States. The intent of the breed was a chicken breed to replace the turkey as the main source for the production of poultry. The namesake of the chicken breed was the country of origin New Jersey.

Breeding

Jersey Giants are the largest chicken breed. The breed standard of the Black Jersey Giants were published in 1922 in the United States in the American Standard of Perfection. The origin of races include Java Chicken, Long Chan and Brahma. The breed standard for white Jersey Giants was established in 1947, the average black chickens are about 0.5 kg heavier than white Jersey Giants.

The chicken breed was temporarily used as a capon and chicken meat on a larger scale, but modern hybrid breeds grow much faster than Jersey Giants, and are therefore now being used by the meat-producing industry. In 1985, the breed standard of the Jersey Giants was established in Germany by the BDRG. Widespread they are mainly in the United States with a little luck you will find this breed also at exhibitions in Europe or other continents.

Features

As the name Jersey Giant abdeutet, this breed is one of the larger and heavier chickens. The back is broad and long, you can see a horizontal posture. The hens have a slightly curved neck, which is fully feathered. The fuselage is long and wide. The shoulders are too broad. The cock is very full fletched. Face like crest are red. The comb is simple, tall and straight. The tabs are also red. The eyes are dark brown, for the uninitiated they seem black. The legs are striking because they are feathered dense in relation to the voluptuous body, causing a wide stance. The legs ( runs) are often dark gray and strong. Typical of the breed are the white soles. Hens lay brown eggs.
