Jervaulx Abbey was a Cistercian abbey in England. The monastery ruin is situated in the county of North Yorkshire approximately 8 km northwest of Masham, Wensleydale.

History

The monastery was founded in 1145 in Fors at Aysgarth of Akarius fitzBardolf as a daughter house of the then not yet of Calder Abbey wegverlegten later Byland Abbey founded and joined in 1147 by the Congregation of Savigny Abbey in France the Cistercian order; that it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. Known for its horse breeding monastery was 1156 after Jervaulx ( Ure vale, valley of the Ure ), laid. In the year 1279 the Abbot Philip was murdered by one of the monks. Jervaulx, the origin place of Wensleydale cheese. The monastery was confiscated in 1537, the Abbot Adam Sedbar and a monk were shot and blown up the church. Part of the convent has been canceled. Pieces of equipment came into the Church of Aysgarth. The standing now owned by the Burdon family ruins of the monastery are preserved to a considerable extent.

Plant and buildings

Construction of the plant probably began shortly before 1156 and was completed around 1220. The style represents the transition from Romanesque (Norman ) for the early Gothic ( Early English ), but the infirmary until the 13th century and the outbuilding is in the southeast of date in some cases only in the 15th century. From the church, a cruciform plant with 10 Jochen in approximately 50 m ( 162 feet ) long nave, a transept with two chapels on each side and a rectangular, 64 feet long and 63 feet wide vierjöchigen choir with ambulatory, only low wall remains are preserved. The south transept has remnants of Dormitoriumstreppe. South of the geosteten church lie the ruins of the corresponding regular schedule exam, the arcade of the cloister has been partially rebuilt. The six stages located beneath the cloister, originally rib vaulted chapter house from the early 13th century had nine ( partly re- established ) columns. The rib- vaulted parlatorium also joined him. The Mönchsdormitorium lay over these spaces. The residence of the abbot is largely preserved. In the southwest of the monastery are the remains of the gatehouse.
