Jerzy Giedroyc

Jerzy Giedroyc (also Giedroyc ) ( born July 27, 1906 in Minsk; † 14 September 2000 in Maisons- Laffitte in Paris) was a Polish conservative writer, journalist and politician. From 1947 until his death he was editor of the magazine Kultura, which was the most important Polish exile magazine of its time.

Life

Giedroyc studied at the Warsaw University of Law (1924-1929) and history ( 1930-1931 ).

In 1930 he became editor of a student magazine. 1931 to 1937 he was married to the Russian Tatjana Shvetsov. 1929 to 1935 he was a speaker at the Department of Agriculture, then in the Commerce and Industry Ministry.

After the outbreak of the Second World War he was evacuated as an employee of the Commerce and Industry Ministry to Romania. In Bucharest, he was hired as secretary of the Polish ambassador. In 1940 he came via Turkey to Palestine, where he was drafted as a soldier in the Polish army in exile.

He participated in the battles for Egypt and the Siege of Tobruk. As a journalist, he was appointed propaganda office of the 2nd Corps. 1944 Giedroyc was ordered to report to officer school in Gallipoli ( Italy). In 1945, he worked in the Ministry of Information of the Polish government in exile in London. He founded in 1946 the Polish Literature Institute in Rome, which in 1947 moved to Maisons-Laffitte near Paris. Co-founder of the Institute were Zofia Hertz and Zygmunt Józef Czapski as well. The Institute published the monthly " Kultura ". After 1956, in the climate of easing the Polish government policy, the residence in Maisons- Lafitte goal of unofficial visits Polish intellectuals was. Giedroyc was in 1996 awarded the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1997 and took an honorary citizen of Lithuania. He was honored with an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Wroclaw University, Warsaw University, the University of Białystok, the University of Szczecin and the Maria Curie -Skłodowska University in Lublin.

Jerzy Giedroyc was buried in the cemetery in Le Mesnil -le- Roi.
