Jerzy Makarczyk

Jerzy Makarczyk (* 1938) is a Polish lawyer, Professor of International Law and was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, president of the Institut de Droit International and judge at the European Court of Justice.

Career

Jerzy Makarczyk his doctorate in 1966 a doctorate in law and was appointed in 1974 professor of international law. In 1985, he was Senior Visiting Fellow at Oxford, and in 1988 professor at the International Christian University Tokyo. He was from 1989 to 1992 and then Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Poland. For the Government of Poland, he participated in the negotiations on the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the territory of the Republic of Poland as a negotiator. Makarczyk was then President of the Delegation of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations General Assembly. From 1992 to 2002 he was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights. Makarczyk was 2002-2004 Advisor to the Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller for foreign policy and human rights. In 2003 he was president of the Institut de Droit International, 2004-2009 Judge of the European Court of Justice.

He has published works on international law, European law and human rights.
