Jerzy Urban

Jerzy Urban ( born August 3, 1933, Łódź as Jerzy Urbach; AKA: Jerzy Kibic Jan Rem, Klakson ) is a Polish writer and journalist. He was under the communist government spokesman General Wojciech Jaruzelski.

Life

Urban was born into a Jewish family. His father was active in the Socialist working class. Urban studied at the University of Warsaw, but was referenced. He first worked as a journalist for the Nowa Wies. On the initiative of Wladyslaw Gomulka was the journal Po prostu, at the Urban worked, closed. Since the 1960s, he worked for Polityka. Journalistic activities, however, were forbidden altogether. Urban is now own the satirical magazine Never - Dziennik cotygodniowy.

Pope criticism

In 2002, Urban caused a stir when he criticized John Paul II. The youth organization of the Law and Justice party led him then to court. He defended his remarks here, by pointing out that an atheist could criticize the religion as well as their followers are likely to expire before the Pope in ecstasy. The Vienna International Press Institute Urban defended and taken up by him freedom of the press. It accused the court to conduct censorship through the back door to bypass the separation of religion and state in Poland. A similar attitude for Urban also took a Reporters Without Borders. Despite international protests by human rights groups Urban was considering a fine verurteilt.Urban to bring the case for human rights before the European Court of Justice.
