Jesse Burkett

Jesse Cail Burkett ( born December 4, 1868 in Wheeling, West Virginia; † May 27, 1953 in Worcester, Massachusetts) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball. His nickname was Crab.

Biography

Jesse Burkett began his career in the National League on April 22, 1890 in Jersey New York Giants. Further stations of his career were the Cleveland Spiders, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns and the Boston Red Sox. Mostly it was used as an Outfielder. Outstanding were his qualities as a hitter. In three seasons, he had a batting average of over 40%. In six seasons, he recorded about 200 base hits.

After his career, he worked as a manager in Minor League Baseball. In 1921, he was then coach of the New York Giants. In 1946 he was elected by the Veterans Committee in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Burkett died in 1953 at the age of 84 years.
