Jihlava (river)

Jihlava River below the town Třebíč

Flood 2006 in Třebíč

The Jihlava ( German Igel ) is a river in the Czech Republic, after whom the town of Jihlava ( Jihlava ) was named.

Geography

The Jihlava springs on the Czech-Moravian Highlands west of Jihlávka, a few meters below the main European watershed. The flow line runs to the city of Jihlava in predominantly north-easterly direction and turn off to the southeast from Jihlava. After 184 kilometers, the Jihlava opens in Ivaň in the Svratka ( Schwarzach ), just a few meters from the confluence of the Svratka in the Thaya dam Nové Mlýny ( Neumühl ).

The original name of hedgehog comes possibly from the German word hedgehog after the sharp stones in the river bed, reminiscent of hedgehog spines. More likely however, is that the name derives from the Celtic ( gael ) uig ( "Bach" ) is derived.

The main tributaries are on the left bank of the Oslava ( Oslau ) at Ivančice and on the right the Jihlávka in Jihlava Rokytná in Ivančice.
