Jim (comics)

Jim (also JIM ) was a comic book series by Jim Woodring, which the artist himself as "Auto Journal" described.

The comics included covered a variety of subjects, often based on dreams. However, they also illustrated Wood Rings hallucinations, his experiences with alcoholism, experiences from his childhood and Hindu ideas. Also found in Jim surrealist paintings and drawings and so-called free -form texts in the style of automatic writing. Style and artistic form of the series were there for the groundbreaking underground comic scene of that time.

Jim started in 1980 as Fanzine until the series was then published as a regular series in 1986 by Fantagraphics Books, first four issues, then six more in Jim volume 2 Most of these books are now out of print, a partial collection but came in 1993 with the title The Book of Jim to market. The Book of Jim was nominated for a 1993 Ignatz Award for Reprint Collection / TPB and 1994 for a Harvey Award for Best Graphic Album of Previously Released material.

In Jim also appeared for the first time and soon the regular character Frank and all the other characters of the Frank - universe that should get their own series later.

Other characters from Jim are Jim Woodring itself ( both in male and in female version) and his family; Pulque, a Mexican speaking, colorful and soft sick monster, experiencing the adventure with a gang of teenagers and Big Red, a brutal and cynical cat who always defends its territory.
