Jim Guy Tucker

Guy James "Jim" Tucker ( born June 13, 1943 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma ) is a former American politician (Democratic Party). He was between 1992 and 1996 Governor of Arkansas.

Early years and political rise

Jim Tucker attended the Harvard University until 1964. Then he wanted to join the reserve of the Marine Corps, but was rejected for health reasons. Between 1965 and 1967 he was a war correspondent in South Vietnam. Then studied at the University of Arkansas law and made there in 1968 his exams. After a short time as a lawyer at a law firm Tucker was 1971-1972 prosecutor in the 6th Judicial District of Arkansas. Between 1973 and 1975 he was member of a commission to revise the criminal law of Arkansas. At the same time he was 1973-1977 Attorney General of the State.

From 1977 to 1979 he represented the 2nd Congressional District of Arkansas in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. Within his party, he was an opponent of Bill Clinton, whom he repeatedly defeated in the 1980s in primaries. Therefore Jim Tucker retired temporarily from politics and was back working as a lawyer.

Governor of Arkansas

In 1990, Tucker originally wanted to re-apply to the office of governor; but he changed his mind and was elected instead to the Lieutenant-Governor Clinton. He has already reckoned with the possibility of choosing Clinton as U.S. president, which would have paved the way for him in the office of governor. This happened actually a Clinton resigned after his election as President of the United States on 12 December 1992 as governor back and Tucker could follow him into office. He first had to finish the unexpired term of Clinton and then resigned in 1994 for re-election. In this election, he was able to prevail against the Republican Sheffield Nelson.

Tucker has promoted economic recovery as governor and expanded educational policy by a higher budget. At that time there was an increase in youth crime, which fought against the governor with tougher laws. Finally, Tucker sat for the further expansion of roads in Arkansas one. Then Tucker but was involved in the Whitewater scandal. He was convicted of conspiracy and mail fraud and had for that reason resign on 15 July 1996 by the Office of the Governor. His lieutenant governor Mike Huckabee finished the remainder of the term.

Due to its health problems ( kidney ) Tucker has been suspended sentence on probation. Today he lives in Little Rock retired. He is married to Betty Tucker, with whom he has four children.
