Jimmy Cheatham

Jimmy Cheatham ( born June 18, 1924 in Birmingham, Alabama; † January 12, 2007 in San Diego ) was an American jazz trombonist.

Life and work

After his youth in Buffalo, he studied at the Institute of Modern Music in New York. His musical mentor was Jo Jones. During the Second World War played in a military combo, where he met Lester Young and Chico Hamilton. Later he worked with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. Together with his wife Jeannie Cheatham he played among others in the Sweet Baby Blues Band. Since 1984 was built on the Concord label a series of albums of their rhythm and blues -influenced Jump tape on which guest musicians like Jimmy Noone, Snooky Young, Charles McPherson, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Red Callender, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Frank Wess, Hank Crawford, Plas Johnson and others participated to 1995

Cheatham died of heart failure.
