Jimmy Gourley

Jimmy Gourley ( James Pasco Gourley Jr., born June 9, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri, † December 7, 2008 in Villeneuve -Saint -Georges ) was an American jazz guitarist.

Gourley grew up in a musical family; his father founded in 1936, Monarch Conservatory of Music in Hammond. In the early 1940s he performed with a band of the same age Lee Konitz. 1943 to 1944 he performed with various bands on in the Los Angeles area before he served in the Navy until 1946.

After his return he became a member of a band of Jay Burkhart in Chicago. Later he also worked with Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Doug Mettome, Lou Levy, Anita O'Day and the duo Jackie Cain and Roy Kral. 1951 Gourley moved to Paris, where he performed mainly with Henri Renaud and performed recordings with Zoot Sims, Gigi Gryce, Clifford Brown and Roy Haynes.

In 1958, he joined several months on with Art Simmons; In the early 1960s he worked with Kenny Clarke, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Zoot Sims, JJ Johnson and Bud Powell. In 1964 he undertook a tour of Europe with its own quartet. In 1966 he joined a trio with Lou Bennett on ( later Eddy Louiss ) pêche and Kenny Clarke in the chat qui.

From 1970 to 1972 Gourley lived in the Canary Islands; after his return to France, he joined various bands, among others the Paris Club Saint- Germain. In the 1980s, he worked in a trio with Pierre Michelot and Charles Bellonzi (or Philippe Combelle ). In 1986, he appeared in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and played recordings with Marc Johnson, Victor Lewis, Ralph Moore and Don Sickler one.
