Jiří Pehe

Jiří Pehe ( born August 26, 1955 in Rokycany, Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech political scientist and writer.

Pehe was born in Rokycany (West Bohemia) in Czechoslovakia. He studied law and philosophy at the Charles University in Prague, where he received a master's degree in 1978 and his Ph.D. in 1980. In September 1981, he fled from Czechoslovakia to Yugoslavia to Italy.

After a short stay in a refugee camp near Rome, he emigrated with his wife to the United States and lived in New York City. There, he was granted political asylum. Until 1983 he worked as a night watchman in a hotel. He attended the School of International Affairs at Columbia University in New York and received his doctorate in 1985. Between 1985 and 1988 he worked for Freedom House and wrote, among other texts for the New York Times.

As of August 1988, he worked as an analyst for the Research Institute of Radio Free Europe in Munich. In November 1989 he became head of the Department of research and analysis of issues central Europe. After Radio Free Europe moved its headquarters from Munich to Prague in 1995, he moved back to the Czech Republic. From 1995 to 1997 he worked as director of the Division of Research and Analysis at the Open Media Research Institute in Prague. From 1997 to 1999 he was director of the Political Department of the Registry of the Czech President Václav Havel, and later he worked until 2003 as a presidential adviser for foreign policy issues.

Pehe wrote numerous scientific publications, essays and papers that have been published worldwide. He has published several books, including three novels.

Since 1999, Jiří Pehe been Director New York University in Prague .. He is a member of the International Forum for Democratic Studies Research Council As a political observer and analyst, he commented on the Czech TV and radio as well as international media policy developments and world events.
