Jiwaka Province

Jiwaka is since May 2012 a province in Papua New Guinea. The name is derived from the place-names Jimi, Wahgi and Kambia. Jiwaka is also the name given to the language of the local people. In the 4798 km ² large province of 341 928 inhabitants (as of 2011). Capital is Minj.

History

The province was created as a spin of South and North Wahgi and middle-and upper - Jimi.

Language

Besides Melpa Jiwaka is the largest language in the Western Highlands Province. It is spoken by about 30,000 to 60,000 people. The Waghi River separates Melpa - speaking culture in the north of the Jiwaka - speaking people in the south. Another language of the district is Ek Nii.
