Joachim Gnilka

Joachim Gnilka ( born December 8, 1928 in Leobschutz / Silesia) is a German Roman Catholic theologian, exegete and an internationally respected biblical scholar.

Academic Career

Gnilka 1947-1953 studied theology, philosophy and oriental languages ​​in Eichstätt, Würzburg and Rome. 1953-1956 he was a chaplain in Würzburg. 1955 doctorate Gnilka with Rudolf Schnackenburgallee in Würzburg Dr.theol. on the topic: Is 1 Cor 3:10-15 is a Scripture testimony to Purgatory? An exegetical and historical study.

Also in Würzburg Gnilka 1959 habilitation; habilitation thesis entitled The hardening of Israel. Isaiah 6:9-10 in Theology of the Synoptics. In 1958 he was a research assistant from 1959 to 1962 and a lecturer at the University of Würzburg. 1962-1975 he was Professor of New Testament in Münster / Westphalia. 1975-1997 and professor of New Testament exegesis and Biblical Hermeneutics in Munich. From 1973 to 1988, Gnilka member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and from 1984 to 1994 member of the International Biblical Commission. Gnilka was appointed by Pope John Paul II an honorary prelate in 1992. In 1997 he became Professor Emeritus.
