Joakim Frederik Schouw

Joakim Frederik Schouw (* 1789 in Copenhagen, † 1852 ) was a Danish botanist and university professor. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Schouw ".

Life

Schouw first studied in 1808 Law at the University of Copenhagen, where he 1816 Dr. jur. received his doctorate. After botanical study trips in the period 1816-1820 he was an associate professor in 1821, and in 1845 professor of botany at the University of Copenhagen. From 1841 he was also director of the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen.

Already in 1822 he tried to delineate the research field of plant geography and bring them into a logical system. Among other things, he formulated the following definition:

Schouw was the first of the suffix "- etum " as used in the naming of plant communities. Since then, the physiognomic plant formations defined as Quercetum, Pinetum, etc. were called.
