Jóannes Eidesgaard

Jóannes Dan Eidesgaard ( born April 19, 1951 in Tvøroyri, Faroe Islands ) was chairman of the Faroese Social Democrats from 1996 to 2011 and Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands 2004-2008.

Eidesgaard worked as a primary and higher secondary school teachers on his native island Suðuroy.

Since 1990 he was a member of Løgting. From 1991 to 1996 he was a minister in various coalitions, and from 1994 to 1996 and Deputy Prime Minister.

From 1998 to 2001 he was one of the two Faroese seats in the Danish Parliament, the Folketing.

Since February 4, 2004 Jóannes Eidesgaard was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. The coalition consisted of Social Democrats, Conservatives and Unionists. After the 2008 general election, a left coalition of Social Democrats, Republicans and the Centre Party was formed under his leadership. When the coalition collapsed in the same year and he had renounced his faith in the Republican boss Høgni Hoydal, he resigned on 24 September 2008.
