João Monlevade

João Monlevade is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Its history goes back to the French mining engineer Jean Antoine Felix Dissandes de Monlevade (1791-1872), who in 1825 built a blast furnace here.

Geographical location

João Monlevade lies at an altitude of 732 meters in the state of Minas Gerais, at a distance of 110 km from the capital. The municipality covers an area of ​​99.283 km ².

João Monlevade borders the municipalities Itabira, Bela Vista de Minas and Rio Piracicaba.

Economy

The economy of the municipality is based on the iron industry. The main businesses include ArcelorMittal Monlevade and Vale do Rio Doce.

Education

There are four universities: the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto ( UFOP ), the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais ( OMF ) and the private universities FUNCEC and CFKennedy.

History

João Monlevade named thanks to the French nobleman Jean Antoine Felix Dissandes de Monlevade. He came to Brazil in 1817. At that time he was only 28 years old and had completed the study of engineering, especially in Minas Gerais. When he came to Brazil, he founded various companies; the most important of which was an iron factory (1825 ). Due to the extensive knowledge that had Jean Antoine obtained through his studies and the purchase of means of production in England was the factory he founded one of the most important in the imperial period. She had a relatively diversified production.
